Costs for Assisted Living in Indianapolis

Rental rates for assisted living apartments and memory care facilities in Indianapolis can vary widely. Monthly prices start at approximately $2,000 and range to $3,345. Typically, these rates include meals, housekeeping, transportation to medical appointments, shopping trips and a variety of scheduled activities.

In addition to the basic rent, communities also charge for the required levels of care for each new resident. These services include bathing, grooming, dressing, lifting, medication management and a variety of other care needs. Care costs can range from $200 to $2,000 depending on the resident's specific needs. Most communities have a staff care specialist who helps prospective residents figure out how much it will cost to live there.

Best Neighborhoods for Assisted Living

Forbes and Livability rank downtown Indianapolis among the best in the United States. Many assisted living communities are located in Old Northside, where the city's wealthiest residents once lived. Other downtown neighborhoods are also home to quality senior communities, such as Cottage Home and Lockerbie Square.

The Butler-Tarkington neighborhood on the north side of town is close to Butler University, a private college that welcomes seniors from nearby communities to its many cultural events. Meridian-Kessler is another well-established and safe neighborhood on the north side of Indianapolis.

In the northwest part of town is Eagle Creek Park, a rural neighborhood that is attractive to many seniors because of its quiet surroundings. Perry Township is a neighborhood on the south side of the city that is known to be home to many empty- nesters and provides a comfortable setting for residents in assisted living communities.

Assisted living in the Indianapolis Suburbs

There are also many assisted living options available within the greater metropolitan area. Each of these is less than an hour from the Indianapolis city center and share similar pricing structures.

To the east, Anderson is one of the biggest suburbs with a population of 56,000. It's 43 miles from Indianapolis and has 33 assisted living communities. Danville, a suburb of 9,000 residents, is 28 miles west of Indianapolis and home to 25 assisted living communities.

Nearby Carmel is one of the country's fastest growing cities. In 2012, CNN/Money Magazine named it the number one city to live in America in the under 300,000 population category. It's a 23-mile drive from Indianapolis and has at least 22 assisted living communities.

Beech Grove was the birthplace of actor Steve McQueen and was originally built as a company town for the "Big Four" railroad. Beech Grove is a six-mile drive from Indianapolis and has 20 assisted living communities.

Clermont is a tiny community of 1,500 residents located about 10 miles from downtown Indianapolis. Despite its small size, the quaint town is home to at least 18 assisted living communities.

Avon is located 18 miles from Indianapolis and has at least 19 assisted living communities to choose from. The town's tree-lined streets earned it a place among the Arbor Day Foundation's list of "Tree City, USA" cities.

Weather

Indianapolis has a humid climate with hot summers and no dry season. The warm season lasts from the middle of May to the end of September, with an average daily high temperature of 74°F. The hottest days of the year are in July, with an average high of 84°F. The cold season runs from the end of November to the end of February with an average daily high temperature of 42°F. The coldest days of the year are in mid-January, with an average low of 17°F.

Veterans organizations in Indianapolis

There are many organizations in the Indianapolis area that can help U.S. military veterans apply for Aid & Attendance, a monthly tax-free benefit for veterans and their surviving spouses. The benefit varies, based on the veteran's financial situation, but can often help offset the cost of assisted living.

Monuments to Greatness

Only Washington, D.C. has more U.S. war memorials than Indianapolis, and trips organized by some of the area's assisted living communities include visits to a number of local monuments honoring the Greatest Generation. These include the Indiana World War Memorial Plaza, the Medal of Honor Memorial, the Indianapolis Soldiers and Sailors Monument and the USS Indianapolis Memorial.
