I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The cost of the facility for a dementia patient is good, but you get what you pay for. My mother's things were lost or stolen, she constantly had scabies, several times she was not clean. The staff turn over was horrible, One time I did a surprise visit at lunch and one of the patients at my mother's table had no teeth was given a sandwich. no one made a move to help her so I tore it to small bits and fed her. My mother always had scratches, slap marks and bruises, the facility told me it was the other patients. I was so glad my mom was out of there. My heart breaks for those left there.

I visited this facility

I liked Caswell House better than other places. My father was up there as well as some other people I know who are still there. I know they have some activities. They had a place where people could go outside with somebody to monitor them. They accept Medicaid. The staff was very helpful. The room was a nice, big room with one person per room. The dining area was like a cafeteria setting, but they had a couple of dining areas, which were all fine with me. I liked that the people were nice, and it was close to where I live. It was very clean. We were very satisfied when my father was there. I would definitely recommend them to others.

I am/was a resident of this facility

My mom had to go to a nursing home for 20 days and then we were lucky enough to get a place at Yancey House. I was thrilled because it's so much better than nursing home. I learned about Yancey through the discharge planner at our local hospital. I was very pleased with Yancey House. The only thing was it was farther from my house. It was an inconvenience. It's not really a horrible inconvenience but it's really much farther. I really enjoyed their family night once a month and all the families would come to visit. They would make a big dinner for everyone. I thought that was really nice.

I visited this facility

Overall I believe the facility to be a very good example of what assisted living should be. The staff I interacted with was very kind, they remembered my parents names due to the frequency of their visits. They dealt with my grandmother in a seemingly kind yet professional manner. She was always clean and well kept. Before her stay there she was not always in the best hygienic state. The food looked good to me although I never ate it. You had to be buzzed out instead of in. Seemed odd at first but once it was explained that it was to keep people from wandering off it made sense. They would put my grandmother in a wheelchair and take her outside for some fresh air if she wanted, which i thought was very nice. While I was never excited to visit, due to my grandmother having dementia and it being hard to see her in a weakened state and not remembering me, I always felt that they took very good care of her all things considered. If I was forced to place someone in assisted living I would consider this to be a good establishment. They had a large porch area with rocking chairs overlooking a wooded area that seemed very peaceful to me. It was away from road noise. The staff were definitely of good quality and genuinely cared for their charges, or at least wee very professional and made it seem that way.
