What to Consider About Assisted Living in Hallowell

Hallowell was first settled in 1762 and founded in 1771 and is commonly referred to as "New Orleans on the Kennebec.” In its early days, Hallowell thrived in the logging, trading and shipbuilding industries and by 1820, it had 2,500 residents. Today, the city is slightly smaller at about 2,400 residents, over a quarter of whom are 65 and over.

Local seniors have six assisted living facilities to choose from, including two in the city proper and four more nearby. As is the case in all of the state, assisted living facilities in Hallowell are categorized according to the level of care they provide. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Licensing and Regulatory Services licenses nine types of assisted living facilities, which may also be called assisted housing programs, including assisted living programs, four levels of private non-medical institutions and four levels of residential care programs.
