I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

They often didn’t check on my father leaving him ho sit in dirty diapers while he has a wound on his backside that went septic being how he ended up in there. He contracted COVID while there and they said they would continue PT with him in his room. All they did was come and change him for the day and say that was OT. He was scared and alone at night and they seemed put out by him. I could never reach the higher ups they never returned calls and nurses from one shift didn’t know what happened in the prior shift. It might have good ratings but the care is severely subpar.

I visited this facility

The apartments that The Harborside have were very attractive. The size was to our liking. The kitchen had ovens and stoves. The number of residents who were walking around by themselves was a very large percentage. People were very friendly, too. The negative thing about it was the down payment for the apartment that we liked was a large amount of money, which would be returnable when we leave one way or another. The person who gave us a tour was very confident. Then we ate in the dining room, and the food was fine. The location is quite nice. It's very close to the North Shore. You can see the water from some of the windows. It's in walking distance to Bar Beach, which is a public beach area.

I visited this facility

I went to The Amsterdam at Harborside a couple of times and it was quite a lovely place. It's just expensive, because you have to buy-in, but it's a great-looking facility. The design was nice. There's a lot of places for socializing, and it offers a lot of things to do, even for outsiders, to come in. They also host different types of things like wine and cheese nights, movies, and lectures. They have physical therapy right onsite, and the place is beautiful, clean, and the apartments are nice and big. There are some people where they pay monthly, and it includes everything. So, I think it's the location that makes it a little expensive.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I went to Tuttle Center at The Amsterdam at Harborside. They have assisted living, a memory unit, and a nursing home, and I visited the assisted living. It's well set up, and the staff seemed to be attentive. It is a continuum of care, and it is local to me. They provide buses into town if you want to go shopping. It's on a very pretty campus, and you can go for walks and things like that. The staff was very considerate, caring, and friendly. I have eaten there before because my aunt is in the independent living section. It's reasonably attractive, but parking is a bit of a pain. The activities are good in the independent living. There are movies, all kinds of book clubs, and so on. It's very expensive, though. My aunt had to buy in like a co-op, but I think she's happy there.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I did a review in 2014. This is an update. The pandemic has obviously slowed us down a bit, but I must say that the staff has done a remarkable job (as usual) of keeping the virus under control and introducing new programs like Zoom to keep us connected. It will be great to get back to using the dining room, but in the meantime, the folks in the kitchen successfully switched to delivering all our meals to our rooms. On top of that, our new chef creates some of the tastiest meals that I have ever eaten. In short, life here is still hard to beat. - thanks to management and and our Amsterdam family.

I visited this facility

Amsterdam at Harborside is a nice place, but it costs a lot of money. It's a lovely place, but it is upper class. My sister is more middle class, so I don’t think she'd be comfortable there. The dining room was very nice and the menu was excellent. The rooms were clean, nice, and large.

Everything at The Amsterdam at Harborside was very nice and I was very pleased with it. They had lectures, exercises, and card games. The dining area looked very nice.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

They moved to The Amsterdam; it was very spacious, and the apartments were a very nice size. The assisted living had more of a medical model -- which they need because of their disabilities. They have lots of activities right on the floor -- Bingo, yoga, music, and things like that. They also have a van that will take them to little shopping trips. The staff was very helpful, informative, and available. They get back to you right away if they don?t know something. They have laundry, housekeeping, and three meals a day, and they do have a van for doctor?s appointments up to a certain radius. It?s been good so far.

The staff all seemed very nice and cooperative at the Tuttle Center. If they have a question, they call. My relative is in independent living. There’s white table cloth in the dining room, and it’s very nice.

I am/was a resident of this facility

My wife and I have been residents since mid 2013 and we do appreciate all of the services that are offered. The buy in is not inexpensive, about $800k or more, and the monthly maintenance charges are about $5500 for two people in a smaller two bedroom unit. All taxes, etc. are paid for and there is a large enough allowance for meals that usually allows both of us to eat as much and as often as we like. The staff are outstanding ranging from the lowest to the highest. Friendlz also. The residents are all very knowledgeable and have all had interesting lives which they share with others. The only reason we are not giving 5 stars is the budget seems to continuously grow and the maintenance charges rise 4 to 4.5 percent a year.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I am a resident of The Amsterdam at Harborside which is a retirement community with continuing care available when needed at no extra cost. The amenities and activities at the Amsterdam are terrific, but residents are the best part of it. It really is like one big family. On top of that, I spent some time as a recovering patient at the Tuttle Center, the attached continuing care facility, and I and can easily say that it is a great facility. The complex, like the Amsterdam itself, is only a few years old, which is a big plus, but more importantly the staff was very caring. One of those benefits for my wife and I is the use of the Tuttle throughout our lifetime at no extra cost. It was very reassuring to see the quality of care that is available to us. On top of that, since the Tuttle is attached to The Amsterdam, my wife could easily visit me at any time and so could other friends that we have made here.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My aunts 86 years old and a little over a year ago living on her own became t troublesome for her. In February of last year she moved to The Amsterdam at Harborside since she moved there I been visiting her at least twice a month. Every visit has been a pleasant experience. I can tell the staff treats her extremely well and is polite and courteous. The food is great and she made a lot of new friends. I would definitely recommend this facility anyone looking for a nice place filled with friendly staff and great food

About The Harborside in Port Washington, New York

Alzheimer's and dementia memory care for Long Island seniors.

At The Amsterdam at Harborside, our goal is to create pleasant days and meaningful moments for our residents with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Our approach to memory support is truly unique — a culmination of two innovative theories.

Naomi Feil's Validation Method is based on the principle that all residents' opinions need to be acknowledged, respected, heard and treated as a legitimate expression of their feelings, regardless of whether or not the caregiver agrees.
