I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The reason why we like Cedarhurst of Oakwood so much is that they keep my dad active. They keep him dressed daily and he interacts with the other memory care residents there. The people are patient with him and they got him to do more for himself instead of just picking him up and putting him in a place. They take the time to let him use his own arm strength and move himself from his chair to another. I think he's even improved his memory. It's just been a positive experience all the way. I'm impressed with how they go around the table and that they know which ones need assistance with cutting up the food. They also even have deeper dishes for some residents because they know that it's going to come out all over the table and they know which ones need that. They're just really attentive to all their residents. They have activities almost all day. They have something going on and they have outside people come in and they schedule entertainment and groups to sing and things like that. It's not too expensive and it's worth every penny.

I visited this facility

Cedarhurst of Oakwood is a very nice facility. The rooms are either single rooms or double rooms. They only have 11 in one area and 7 in another, so my wife would be well looked after. They have a library, a sitting room, a gathering room. For the assisted living, they have bingo and other activities. The staff I met were very nice. We're very impressed with it. I like the small size.

Provider Response

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom was a past resident. She initially went in at assisted living. I toured their place, I met their administrator, and she was very nice. My mom fell, it increased her dementia and Alzheimer's, and the facility thought she would be very suited for memory care, and so they moved her to their memory care unit. This was during COVID time. I was not able to get in and really see her, or spend any time with her, so I had to do window visits. In the meantime my mom Alzheimer's had developed, my mom was a little bit more combative, she was with strangers, she was falling, and I just don't think their staff was 100% very well trained with Alzheimer's and dementia. I felt like we were not at the right facility in memory care. She had a high fall risk, and they had told me that if she fell again, they couldn't keep her there, and they would not be able to take her back. They were good and they did the best they could do. Their nurse there was an awesome lady, she really tried and really took a lot of extra effort with my mom, and really tried to spend some time with her and console her. She went above and beyond with my mom, but she left them.

My mother moved in. The accommodations are very nice, the rooms are a very good size, the amenities at the memory care side are very, very good, the space they have for social meetings and exercising is very nice. The staff there is very helpful, and has good tenure, which is very important to me, not to mention the price is good, which is not the only issue, but the price is in line with what I expect. I was able to see people eating, and the food appeared to be good; the selections were good. For the people in the memory care area they of course help check out what they would like, but they do have a list of things that I gave them, that she does like, and they're using that to make decisions.

I visited this facility

It was nice, but it wasn't for us. It was a new and modern place, and the facilities were lovely. My mother would have ended up in their dementia unit which was a locked-down facility, and it wouldn't have been good for her. The person who assisted us was good and answered all our questions. We saw the residents eating, and they looked happy.

We visited and I liked that the place was very clean and the appearance was very nice. They have good food, and the value is very reasonable compared to other places.

I visited this facility

We visited and it was nice, but it seemed not as large or as open as other places. They had activities but the atmosphere wouldn't work for my mother-in-law. It seemed a little more updated and didn't have that homey feeling to us. They had a movie night, trivia night, bingo, church on Sundays, painting classes, crocheting, and different things on the weekends. The dining area was fine, but we didn't try the food. We did get a sample menu and it looked like really good food, like the kind of stuff my in-laws would have eaten.

I also visited here and recommended it to one of my mom's friends. The staff was really polite and sweet. The rooms were great and big in size, too. This place was my mom's second choice. Their dining room was wonderful. It looked like a restaurant with nice table settings. It also came with a lower price. They had activities, like exercises, in the morning. During my visit, I saw the ladies doing exercises all together. They also had movies and shopping days. This place was a little cheaper, and I would have chosen it, given the chance.

My mom has lived at this facility for the past two and a half years. She gets good care and enjoys the activities and sharing the meal experience with her tablemates. All of the staff are always very accommodating and attentive when mom needs help. Between my brother and I, we visit often on days, evenings and weekends and the building always looks and smells great. My in-laws will be looking into moving to Georgia from Tennessee soon and I would not think twice about moving them here.

I like it a lot. It is a lot bigger than what my aunt had before. She has a little apartment with a screened-in porch. It is carpeted. It has a bathroom, a refrigerator, a kitchen sink, and microwave. It is much cheaper than where she was before. They have a lot of different activities. She participates in everything they do, i.e., bingo, Trivial Pursuit. The staff is very hands-on. They check on her every couple of hours. They also have a doctor on call and a nurse there 24/7.

We put my mom in here. We chose this one probably for the location and the size of it. So far, my mom likes the people there. Also the staff that I met so far are quite good actually. With regards to food, the couple of times I've eaten there, it was good. Mom is not really happy with it though because she can't have salt or sugar and she has to count her carbs. This is something they could improve on as far as being able to meet dietary needs of their clients. My mom has been there for six weeks now and we had no problem at all with regards to its sanitation. As far as activities go, they have bingo and flower arrangements. They would also have a doctor that come in once a month for like an Alzheimer's support group. I was also there one night and they had a magician there. They also just had a fall festival.
