Food - Menu and pictures look great but reality is disappointing. Meat tends to be chewy or hard to manage (pig ears?, 2 chicken wings). Vegetable is always blanched with no flavor. Soup is always light broth. Keep in mind most residents are old; either with dentures or few teeth left. Their in-house dietician also happens to be Head of Maintenance, Head of Care Manager, Director of Operations -- she lacks understanding ofwhat senior residents' dietary needs are. Staff - care managers: 50% are good and caring. Management folks care more about selling care points rather than helping/working with you to effectively manage your love ones' issue; especially if your love ones have some form/level of dementia. Facilities - Very nice looking facility. Clean with well managed gardents. The hallways are wide and well lit which is very nice. So, this place looks good. Values: If you just look at the rent, it is not bad. It is the care fees that get you. Care fees are base on service points, all care services are a-la-cart. So, It doesn't take long before your care fees become more than rent. Activites - Thay claim their TaiChi has prevented falls. Their standing taichi exercise is offered everyday but only 5 minutes of it where most residents are sitting down. Afternoon activites is ok but gets old pretty quickly. They used to take more residents for Monday outings; but after pandemic, they've reduced the number of residents (limited to about 6 residents) and often time they select which able-body residents to take.

Aegis Gardens is great for Asians. They speak Asian, and the staff members are really good. It's just their community fee is over twice as much as everywhere else I saw. The studio apartments were OK. It's very comfortable and it felt a little homey. Their food looked fantastic. They have three chefs: one who is Shanghainese, one from Hong Kong, and one chef who is Cantonese. They have Chinese calligraphy, arts and crafts, and exercises. It's a very nice facility.

Aegis Gardens was very clean, and the staff was friendly. The organization and maintenance of the community was very good. They had private rooms, but it was very expensive. We were looking for something semi-private for my father, but they did not have that available. It is a very good place but too pricey.

Provider Response

We are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to Aegis Gardens! If you have any additional questions or if we can help you find the right home for your father please don't hesitate to speak with our Marketing Director or General Manager.

The people at Aegis Gardens are pretty good. They have Chinese-speaking staff and serve Chinese food. Mom has one-on-one caregivers as her companions who are keeping her engaged all the time.

Aegis Gardens’ seems really nice and large. They have both memory and retirement. They have games, field trips, and bingo -- very organized. Everyone has a room and bathroom, but it’s really large, I think my dad would get lost. If someone is still active, that would be a great place. The staff was very nice, always smiling. They have a menu and make food for the oriental people.

Provider Response

Tham, thank you for leaving this detailed feedback about your experience with Aegis Gardens.

My mother is in a studio in Aegis Gardens. This place is very unique because it's all Asian, so they have a tremendous advantage because my mother does not speak English. They have Chinese food, an Asian menu, and Asian staff. I don't like the food, but that's just a personal opinion. They have exercises, mahjong, and bingo. The downside is it's extremely expensive.

Provider Response

Paulayyeo, thank you for your kind words and this wonderful review!

I visited this facility

Aegis was a very pleasant and very attractive facility. However, Aegis was really set up for some really ill people. We just had a walk around the facility. Everything was nice and relaxed. We were not able to talk to the staff because they were doing their own business, which was important of course because they had some sick people to take care of. It was more of a nursing facility. However, the appearance was very sophisticated.

I visited this facility

Aegis Gardens of Fremont is a beautiful facility. It is a two story building built in the shape of a square doughnut with a really nice garden in the center or doughnut hole. It looks fairly new and obviously well kept up. When you enter the building, the entry is spacious and looks quite nice. The more independent residents occupy either studio or one bedroom apartments with some rooms facing the interior (center garden) and the other rooms facing the exterior (parking lot with some foliage). The rooms were standard sizes. Nice wide hallway between interior and exterior apartments. Residents ate in a common formal dining room with an asian menu. Dining room for these residents was very nice, like eating out at a formal restaurant with white table cloths and menus. The residents who resided in memory care were placed in a separate, locked area (still in the same building) with their own dining room. We visited memory care area which wasn't quite as nice as the the area for the more independent residents. We looked at the few memory care residents who resided in the dining area and it was kind of eerie how quiet they were; there didn't seem to be much interaction between the memory care residents and staff and more independent residents. Asian languages spoken at this Aegis facility were (in order) Mandarin, Cantonese and Toisan. The staff at Aegis Gardens seem to be fairly nice with excellent qualifications. However, Aegis is a for-profit business and they are quite business like when stating costs. Any additional service above the basic rent is charged. So if your parent needs help with anything like walking or medication reminder or bathroom help, Aegis charges. They also conduct assessments on a regular and frequent basis. Aegis uses a different fee table for the independent residents and the memory care residents.

Aegis Gardens seems like a great assisted living home. All of the staff that work there seem to be really friendly and helpful. I was visiting my grandma who is staying there at the moment. The facilities seemed to very clean. They also have many activities for the seniors who are staying there. One of the things that I didn't like about this place is that they don't let the seniors leave the facility very often. They are also very strict on the daily schedule for people who stay there. It is very expensive to live there but overall it seems like a nice place to live. Maybe when I'm at that age, I'll live there as well. I will also recommend this facility to any of my friends who are looking at assisted living facilities for their family members. But overall, this seems like a great place to live.

This was a Chinese Assisted Living Center geared towards elderly who could only speak in a Chinese delegate. Overall, the experience was pleasant. My grandmother spend five years here before she passed away. The staff was very friendly and there were many activities to get involved with.

My grandma stays here and I visit her twice a week. This facility is very nice, clean, and well-kept. The administrative staff and the nurses and caregivers are very accommodating and helpful. The food provided is decently good and they provide plentiful portions. For elderly people that are more active, there is space in the back yard area to take a stroll. The landscaping of this area is very nice with a fountain, flowers, and a small garden area in the corner. Additionally, they have many activities planned during the day for everyone to participate in. On special occasions they plan festivities for residents' families to attend with food and entertainment. Overall, I highly recommend this facility.

I'm not sure exactly which metrics by which to measure the quality of an assisted living facility so here is my best attempt. My grandma was recently moved to this facility. Whenever I visit the staff seems friendly and open. Note that this is primarily an Asian (Chinese) facility. The food is decent but I could see it becoming monotonous. It's usually soft for obvious reason. They seem to try and have events for the residents to promote socializing and fight boredom including mahjong and field trips. There isn't much space for exercise however which is a negative. My grandma has always been enthusiastic about walking but there isn't much space there. There is a small courtyard where she can do "laps" but not much else. The facility keeps an early schedule with residents usually sleeping by 8pmish. Overall, I think the quality of the facility is pretty good as far as assisted living facilities go (also considering this is the only one with which I have experience).

As soon as your step in , you get a very homey feeling. The staff are friendly, helpful and most importantly speak Chinese. This centrally located community is a part of a big chain, but has the warmth of a local family run community. It is a pricey, but well worth the money

Friend or relative of resident

My grandmother lives at Aegis Gardens. We chose it for two reasons a) its a beautiful property b) the staff are wonderful and speak Chinese. Surprisingly this is the only place in the SF Bay area that specifically caters to an Asian community. The facilities are also spacious, clean, and conveniently located by the freeway and stores. All meals are prepared for, there is a beautiful garden out back, and they have daily activities and parties for the residents. Definitely a great place to ease the move in transition - its upscale and high class! The only thing to note is that a majority of residents are not all too active or social.

Aegis Gardens in Fremont, CA, is a unique senior living community, dedicated to the Asian culture, offering assisted living and dementia care. Located close to shopping and medical centers, those who call Aegis Gardens home will feel enveloped in the Asian culture through the interiors, landscaping and excellent Asian cuisine. Feng Shui consultants advised architects and builders on the layout and design of the community. All 40 staff members at Aegis Gardens are of Asian descent and speak various Chinese dialects.
