I visited this facility

Somerford House and Place Frederick made me feel like they would be happy to have me there. They were very welcoming. The one-bedroom apartments were small, but they were clean. The dining area looked nice. I saw some people playing bingo when I was visiting. It's a wonderful location. It's next to a manmade lake. It's beautiful. It's all on one floor and it's a square shape, and the center of it was a nice courtyard. That was very nice.

I found Somerford House & Place Frederick to be very helpful because I was just at the beginning of my search and they helped in getting me started and sending me information. The staff is very pleasant, very helpful, and very knowledgeable. My niece has been there for just two weeks, but she's already involved with their activities. She has a studio apartment and it's really lovely. It overlooks a lake and she has a big bay window. It's perfect for her. They have everything there. They have an exercise room, beauty parlor, a game room, a bistro, and a dining area. She said the food is great and that she can eat something anytime she wants. She could just walk down to the dining room and they have treats and stuff for them. I think it's in a lovely setting and they've been accommodating.

My mom is at the Somerford House Frederick. Her room is very pleasant and very homey. The place is clean, bright, and well-kept. There are a lot of activities to keep the residents active and interact well with each other. The staff members are wonderful, very personable, very nice, very accommodating, and very concerned about the residents. The food is also very good. The dining room is very nice. It's not like they use paper plates and cups, they use real silverware, real plates, and real glass. So, everything seems very respectful to the residents. She does the exercise class and she likes any of the activities that involve music. They have quite a bit of people coming in and doing some concerts, singing or playing the piano or playing guitar. They have a lot of either exercise or music-oriented activities and mom likes all of them. We're very happy.

I was very impressed with Somerford House & Place of Frederick. It was clean, bright, and very active. While I was there, I didn’t see any resident "parked." Everyone was either engaged in an activity, interacting with people, doing something on their own, or moving from one place to another. I was very impressed with the level of individual care that was shown. The location was lovely because there were a remarkable number of places to sit and enjoy the wonderful views or to go out and putter around a little bit in an outside area. I have never seen any other area as well and thoughtfully set up as their memory care center. The amount of attention to detail and the thought as to what their clients might need blew my mind. There's no doubt in my mind that if my mom would need memory care, that’s where she'd go. The private rooms were bright and sunny and relatively spacious. The hallways were nice, wide, and full of artworks. There were several small groups doing different things, like watching TV in one of the common areas. They had an entertainment schedule that evening that people were talking about. The different dining areas were very well set up. I was particularly impressed with the number of small nooks that they had throughout the whole dining area so that nobody would be sitting in the middle of a big crowd of people trying to eat dinner. If I needed any kind of nursing care, that’s where I would want to go.

We liked Somerford House, and that would be our choice of place to go. It was very clean. The people seemed very happy. I liked the rooms. They had nice activities. They had an outdoor garden area, and they had a lake there that they could walk around. They serve meals. They have a workout room and a library.

I also visited Somerford House & Place of Frederick. It looked like very dark and gloomy. It did not look like a happy place to be. The rooms were OK. Many of them had patio to them. Their dining area was OK. The staff seemed polite. The person I talked there was very polite and energetic. He explained everything. I thought it was more expensive. The location was convenient because it was very close to my house.

Somerford is upscale and a nice community. The food was great, they offered lunch and they toured us to the facility. The people were friendly. But I found it to be more costly. The apartments were nice and spacious. They had a wide variety of activities. We went to the assisted and walked in to the memory care unit.

I visited Somerford. My experience there was great. The rooms were very nice. Also the staff was very nice. They have a lot of activities such as daytrips, window-shopping, and happy hours. They were pricey though. As everywhere, it's expensive too. Overall, they're very good.

Somerford Place is often understaffed and care seems stretched. I have also noticed frequent staff turnover. Food seems adequate, but I think that beverages need to be more accessible for residents. Have also noticed a problem with ant pestilence several times when visiting. Have really nice outside courtyards and patios, but doors are locked and guests can't take residents outside without tracking down staff to open the doors to go out. Feel like I'm bugging staff if I have any requests because they seem so frazzled. They do have some nice activities for residents and I believe that is a strength. I have not witnessed their memory care to date. Their nursing care often is shared between Somerford House and Place and this seems stretched thin also. All in all, I believe they need to increase their staff and train them on customer relations.

I like Somerford. It was just more homey. They even have a duck pond outside. I like the apartment. It had a living room, a bedroom, a little eating kitchen, and a little patio on the outside. I like the way the setting was on the patios of all the apartments. It just seemed more personal. The patios face each other like a circle, so all the residents can see each other. I like Somerford the best when it came to their rooms and everything. It didn't seem like they were in assisted living; it looked like they were in an apartment complex. My father smokes cigars, and Somerford was the only one that would allow him to have a cigar.

Somerford Place Frederick was exceptional. The reason it was exceptional was that they actually have a memory clinic there. They have an assessment method that has been developed that can identify your level of cognitive functioning, your needs for assistance for activities of daily living and the recommended living, and finally, how much support you would need to maintain the highest level of independence. So the fact that they have that there, I just think it was fabulous. The staff there was very professional. You can tell that they have built-in this sort of added support because they also have an Alzheimer's wing. I like that it is an assisted living and that it is all on one floor. They have different activities like exercise programs, music programs, etc. I really like it a lot. You could use their transportation service so you can easily get out and go to different places in the community of Frederick, and I like that very much. Food was American fare. It was low-sugar and low-salt. Overall, Somerford Place Frederick was a beautiful community. I have already recommended it to someone whose father has dementia. I told her that this is the one place that I would put a loved one because it is professional but caring.

Somerford was probably my number three. They were very nice too. The staff was very nice and accommodating. Their rooms and activities were similar to the other facilities; however, I like this one better. The rooms were very comfortable. Most of them had a small kitchenette, private bath, little living room area, and bedroom. It was more than what my mother needs because she doesn't cook or anything.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My parents are current residents of Somerford House. It was one of the places that was on the list given by Caring.com. We have been really happy with this place. My parents seem to be happy as well being there. There's a hometown feel to it. They seem very concerned about the residents. They try to make it a home for them. However, their rooms are on the small side. We have my parents in their one-bedroom and it's a bit tight. Regarding the staff, so far, they're great. They really do seem to be very caring and very responsive. They've been very responsive to my mom's dietary requirements and she didn't have to ask for them not to put sauces on her food. Food is fine. They are more homecooked meals. My parents would have their main meal at lunch time. Now, they have gotten used to it and they really like it.

The dementia/memory care unit is extremely understaffed. We are so disapointed in the lack of quality care our Dad received. Family visited daily and we were stunned by how deceiving initial tours of this facility turned out to be once he moved in. Receptionists were more aware of paitient issues or needs than nurses and administrators were. Miscommunications, and ongoing delays was through out his entire stay. Paitients who are active are left on their own despite their mental capacity. Those who are not active or are heavily medicated are herded to a main living room area by the nurses desk to sleep through out the day. The activities director looks exhausted from doing beyond the scope of her job to assist residents with nursing needs. It is very sad as the facility is beautiful and nice location.

My mother's happy at Somerford House. The care from the aides to the nurses, to the physical therapists, has just been outstanding. The place is so clean. She's in a large bedroom with a large bathroom. The food is really fresh and their dining room is really pretty. But it seems like they've cut down some of the food portions. They have lots of activities like bingo and they even have people that comes in to play music and sing. They have movies on Saturdays in a big room with a widescreen TV. They have also crafts and they take them out for different activities. We haven't had a problem or issue with anything. My sisters and I are very happy with it.

I think this facility was really nice. The people there are nice and friendly. The nurses were really caring and always fed the medications on time. There are a lot of fun actiivites and games like bingo. The amenities were great. This facility was right next to a lake and it had a really pretty view. There is a garden near it and lots of chairs outside for the seniors to live in. The staff were friendly and willing to help me and the residents. The facilities are nice. The rooms are really nice and pretty big. In each room, there is a bed, a sofa, a refrigerator, and a personal bathroom. This facility even serves dinner and snakes if needed. If the residents are hungry, they can eat! This is a great facility. My grandma loves it. I would recommend it to anyone who needs assisted living help. Somerford is a really friendly place.
