I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Courtyard Manor of Farmington Hills is one of the few special facilities that have a behavioral care unit. The other places were not prepared to deal with somebody who has aggression and psychosis, and they're just nursing homes or their memory care units were just a bunch of people with Alzheimer's that weren't aggressive. They have a psychiatrist on staff and my brother-in-law needs to have his medications monitored and adjusted. There's a high staff-to-patient ratio. They go through specific training to deal with patients that have psychosis and other issues in terms of how to handle somebody who's violent or abusive. They have several structured activities that he can participate in when he can. The facility is clean, secure, and attractive. It's a place that I would go to. They rate their prices between $6000 and $7000 a month and their residents are classified one through three, one is requiring minimal care and three is requiring one-on-one care.

Provider Response

Thank you for your very descriptive review of our community. And recognition for what we do. We're very proud to take care of your loved one. I hope your brother in law has found a good home with us. Thanks again for your kind review and recognition. Best Regards

I do not recommend this facility for your loved one. The care that my parent received was awful...neglectful at best. I visited many times, and with the exception of Brian (Activity Director), I never saw the staff engage the residents, except to command them ("take your medicine", "come and eat", "take your medicine", ...). My loved one lost 30 pounds in less 1 year (and they aren't in end stage dementia), was over-medicated, and often found shoeless, wearing the same clothes for 2 days in a row (and the clothes usually weren't even my parent's). They aren't designed to help your loved one thrive. For example, there is no exercise (no walking area available, so all they can do is laps inside the building) no activities (no activities room), the music is from the 80's (more for the staff, than for the residents), and several times the movies on the community TV were extremely inappropriate (horror and/or very sexually explicit). They are simply there to make sure their residents eat (barely) and takes their medicine.

Courtyard Manor is great. I like it, and it seems good. My dad is in memory care. It is very clean. It does not smell, and is just comfortable. It is maybe a little sparse, but it is nice. The staff has been so helpful, caring, and understanding. They try to explain things to help us understand the process of aging, especially with Alzheimer's. They have been awesome. Right now, because of COVID there are fewer activities. Normally they would go out and do things. They do have the courtyard, and my dad loves plants. He really enjoys that. The dining room is clean. The food is not overly fancy, but it is simple and good.

Provider Response

Becca, Thank you so much for your kind review. Our residents care is our top priority. We love having your dad here with us. I personally love sitting down and talking with him. He's a very smart man. I especially love to hear about all is knowledge and his many travels through out his life. He's just so pleasant to be around. He's especially taken with Bryan our Activities Director. I'm so glad our staff have been able to help you understand the process of aging. Remember, we're always available to you to help with anything we can. Again, thank you for your kind review of Courtyard Manor of Farmington Hills.

Good care, but beware! We are generally pleased with the level of care my mother received at Courtyard Manor including care in her final days; HOWEVER MY MOTHER'S JEWELRY WAS MISSING when we claimed her remains. I recognize we should have been more proactive in securing Mom's belongings, but with all the other details of her care it slipped our minds. NEVERTHELESS as a memory care facility, Courtyard Manor should discuss with family members a plan to secure precious possessions like wedding rings. My mother had dementia, so there are many possible explanations for the lost items, but Courtyard was no help and only pointed us to their liability release in the end. That is CYA, not above and beyond care. Make a plan and make sure your loved ones most prized possessions are accounted for and safe.

My mom is at Courtyard Manor of Farmington Hills, and so far it's been very good. With COVID precautions, I have not been able to actually get in there, but I spent quite a bit of time talking with various people there, and I'm able to contact them whenever I need. My mom is also in hospice, and they are coming in there on a regular basis right now. The first two weeks that she is there, she will be in their quarantine unit. After that, I will be able to see her and get in there with an appointment, and I'm looking forward to that, but so far so good. Everyone I talked to has been very helpful and very polite; they answered all my questions and offered a lot of insight. One of the things that I really liked about the place was they seemed to have staff longevity there, which is really nice to hear, as opposed to a lot of staff turnover. It's also well within our price point right now, so that's a plus. A lot of the other facilities were just more than what we could afford.

Provider Response

Thank you Susan for your wonderful review. You'll get in soon to visit your mom. Thank you for understanding our Covid precautions. Our priority is to keep our residents safe and taken care of to the best of our ability during these difficult times during a pandemic. We strive to continue to be available to you for any questions or concerns you may have. Again thank you for your wonderful review.

Our family has been extremely pleased with the care our loved ones have received at Farmington Courtyard. The rooms are cozy and inviting allowing the residents to add their own personal touches The common areas allow room for individual and group activities. We are particularly pleased with how quickly the nursing staff addresses any medical changes with the residents and keeping the family informed of the action being taken. Staff and administrators have all been very accommodating making sure that the residents are comfortable. Having our loved ones there has given us Peace of Mind.

Provider Response

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We try very hard to take care of our residents. Not only are they your loved ones, they're ours as well. Thank you for your appreciation of our staff and facility . Your kind words are appreciated. Thank you.

Very poor facility. There are some good caretakers, but most are unmotivated, untrained, and uninformed. Too few caretakers for the number of patients. High turnover rate for all types of employees. The buildings are old and in need of repair. Toilets overflow, air conditioning doesn't work, fire alarms blast for hours, heat goes out, gutters are full of weeds. Caretakers didn't supervise my mother properly and she fell, gashed her head, and went to hospital with black eyes. Happened over and over again. This place should be shut down.

Provider Response

We are sorry you had this experience and we have addressed your concerns. The care and safety of our residents is our top priority. If you would like to discuss further, please feel free to call us.

This facility just does not have enough trained staff with good people/patient skills. 2 untrained, non-motivated, non-caregiving caregivers who are not supported for as many as 20 possible demented residents is inadequate. The caregivers/med techs are not adequately trained, updated or informed. They are often left to operate on their own. They are not supported or advised/updated about patients between shift changes. At times patients are not monitored or changed regularly. Often there aren’t enough staff to feed patients timely. There is a lack of communication between staff. Staff is quick to pass the responsibility/blame to one another without resolve.

Provider Response

We are sorry that you feel that way as we strive to communicate with families and staff as we know that it is essential to ensure the best care for our residents. Courtyard Manor of Farmington Hills has an intensive training program that goes above and beyond what the state requirements are. If you would like to discuss this further we would be happy to do so. Please call management.

Not enough staff to care for residents properly. While some staff are friendly and hardworking, others are sullen and rude. Poor training generally.

I can’t say enough good things about our experience at Courtyard Manor of Farmington Hills. My father moved in late last year. He was in poor health due to neglect at a different assisted living facility. Everyone at Courtyard was so helpful in getting my father the care he needed. I was always able to reach a nurse or member of management with questions and was impressed with how professional and caring they all were. Unfortunately, his health has declined further and he is now in a nursing home. If his health improves and he’s able to move back to an assisted living environment, this is the only facility I will consider. Thank you to everyone at Courtyard Manor of Farmington Hills!

Their website claims they offer specialized care for "challenging behaviors," but be warned. Said "specialized care" consists of nothing more than administering strong anti-psychotic medications that are NOT recommended for patients with dementia and Alzheimer's, and can turn your loved one into a compliant turnip, or even be fatal. My loved one had moderate dementia and was fine during the day, but was having issues with sun-downing (increased dementia late in the day or at night), and adjusting to a new, unfamiliar place. They dealt with it by medicating her to the point where she became non-responsive, and could no longer eat, drink, walk, talk, or toilet herself. Sadly, this is very common in elder-care facilities. Do some research before you place your loved one in any facility (Google the terms dementia and anti-psychotics and start reading). I certainly wish I had done so!

Provider Response

We are truly sorry that your experience with Courtyard was not as expected. CYM has successfully managed residents with challenging behaviors while under the close advisement of an experienced geriatric psychiatrist. Our team strives to customize a specific care plans for each unique resident. We understand that watching a loved one with Alzheimer’s/Dementia can be a painfully short or long journey for families, especially those with challenging behaviors. Courtyard Manor has access to many resources that can offer support to our families during their stay. if you would like, we would be happy speak to you in further detail.

I would not recommend sending your loved one here. Supervising staff and management promise safety, care, and dignity, however do not provide enough oversight to ensure it is being carried out by nursing staff. It was disappointing that this dedicated memory-care facility was unable to carry-out well-known and researched techniques for best caring for those with dementia/Alzheimer's. In my experience, you will need to check in on your loved one very frequently to advocate for their needs.

The Courtyard was very nice, but I didn’t find it quite as homey as I wanted. It was in my top 3. The facility was clean and organized. The staff was very friendly and very nice; they seemed to know everybody.

Courtyard Manor was where we put our mother before she passed. You can bring your own furniture for your room. The staff was very warm and friendly. The care was very good.

I visited this facility

I liked the setup of the rooms at Courtyard Manor of Farmington Hills. They had a divider in the rooms so the residents could have their bedroom in one part of the room and the living room area in one part. It gave more of an illusion of an apartment, but it didn't seem to be kept up as well as some of the other places that I looked at. If it wasn't for the smell, I probably would've settled on that one. The smell was just not acceptable.

Provider Response

I visited this facility

I was a bit skeptical of this place at first because we had moved a family member here from a different home. The original home was expensive and very nice and we moved him here because it was more affordable. I figured this place was going to be less impressive because of the cost but that really wasn't the case. My Mom's uncle really enjoyed his stay here. It was cheaper, but that was about the only difference from his other home. The area is very nice. Farmington Hills is a very nice city and the location of the home and the physical appearance of the home is very pleasant. The landscaping was very nice and it constantly looked like the grass had been cut. There were lots of flowers nicely planted and it was the same story on the inside. The place was very clean and there was no smell. I've noticed in my experience with these homes that some of them have an odor. This place was well kept and the staff was very nice. I can't remember what type of activities this place had, but what I remember most was how nice it was inside and how clean the entire place looked.
