What to Consider About Assisted Living in Crane

The Missouri town that is now known as Crane was once called Hickory Grove. In the 1880s, this town had a group of homes, a couple of general stores, a mill and a blacksmith shop. The name was changed when residents asked for a post office, only to find out that another Missouri town went by the name Hickory Grove. At that time, the name was changed to Crane, the name of the creek that runs through the town. Today, Crane has just 1,500 residents, over 20% of whom are seniors.

Seniors who need some assistance with activities like grooming and eating may decide to transition to assisted living facilities, which are also known as residential care facilities in Crane. Crane has two facilities, and there are three more nearby. These facilities are licensed by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Crane

  • Crane has a low overall cost of living that comes in about 16% lower than the national average, mainly due to its modest housing costs. This may bring down the cost of local assisted living expenses, which may benefit seniors with restrictive budgets.
  • Crime is relatively uncommon in Crane, making the city a good option for active seniors seeking a safe community to spend their retirement years. The city's property crime and violent crime rates are each about 10 points lower than the respective national averages.
  • Year-round temperatures in Crane run between 21-89 degrees, and humidity levels are generally low throughout the year. The city only gets 10 inches of annual snowfall on average, which may appeal to seniors who do their own driving.
  • In Missouri, income from retirement savings accounts and private pensions are taxed as regular income. Public pensions are partially taxed, and most seniors do not pay state income tax on their Social Security benefits, depending on their income.
  • The Crane area has few facilities from which to choose in the event of a medical emergency or illness, with the nearest major hospital located in Aurora.
  • Public transportation in Crane is provided by OATS Transit. Routes are funded by the Area Agencies on Aging, and there is a suggested donation for seniors age 60 and over.
