Paying for Assisted Living in  Broward County

Broward County is part of the Miami metropolitan area, so assisted living prices in the county are likely similar to those in Miami itself. According to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey, Miami seniors pay an average of $3,500 per month for assisted living. This is relatively affordable compared to the Sunshine State as a whole, with its average cost of $3,700 per month. And compared to the national average of $4,300, assisted living in Miami is about 18% more affordable.

The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities

The Miami area offers the lowest average assisted living cost in South Florida, making Broward County an ideal destination for the region’s budget-conscious seniors. In nearby Port St. Lucie, assisted living costs an average of $4,399 per month, about 25% higher than in Miami. To the west in Naples, monthly costs are even higher at $4,550. While the average cost in Orlando is $200 higher than in Miami, other Central Florida cities have lower assisted living costs. For example, on the Gulf Coast, Tampa seniors pay $3,225 per month for assisted living care. Inland in Sebring, costs are even lower at $2,895. Further north in the Panhandle, seniors pay some of the state’s highest assisted living prices. Panama City’s average cost is $5,161, while the monthly average is $5,506 in the state capital, Tallahassee.

It also helps seniors access state and federal programs, such as Florida Medicaid or Social Security. 
Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services(954) 357-6622The Elderly and Veterans Service Division offers many programs and services for Broward County residents. These may include case management and medical alert systems. For seniors who’ve served in the military, it offers free help with obtaining veterans benefits, including assistance submitting claims. The division also provides information and referrals for other helpful veterans services.
South Florida Institute on Aging(954) 484-7117The South Florida Institute on Aging (SOFIA) is a nonprofit organization that aims to help seniors thrive. It holds free technology classes to help seniors learn about everything from sending emails and social networking to online banking and staying safe on the internet. SOFIA also sponsors Senior Corps programs that help older adults pursue meaningful volunteer opportunities, such as mentoring underserved children or helping veterans make the transition to civilian life.
Broward County Senior Centers(800) 963-5337There are many senior centers in Broward County, including the Daniel D. Cantor Senior Center and the Northwest Federated Woman’s Club of Broward County. Senior center programming varies between locations and may include card games, exercise classes, health screenings and field trips. Some centers also offer transportation, legal services and other supports. Older adults in Broward County can contact the Florida Department of Elder Affairs to find their closest senior center.
Broward County Transit(954) 357-8400Broward County Transit (BCT) operates an extensive bus system that helps seniors travel between Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Sunrise, Coral Springs and other municipalities. With proof of age, seniors pay discounted bus fares. For seniors who aren’t able to ride the regular buses, BCT offers an accessible shared-ride service called Transportation Options (TOPS).
Legal Aid Service of Broward County(954) 765-8950Legal Aid Service of Broward County offers free legal services to low-income people who can’t afford an attorney. Eligible seniors can get help with many types of civil legal issues, such as debt collection, federal tax disputes and problems with veterans benefits, including VA healthcare. People aged 60 and older are exempt from the organization’s financial eligibility guidelines.
