I am/was a resident of this facility

I'm living in The British Home inside the campus of Cantata Adult Life Services. I have been here for almost a year now. There's not much to like here. My room is adequate and nice. There are some very competent people here, and then there are a couple who I cannot even give them a good comment. There are some nice people here and there are some bad people here. I came here for rehab, but I don't get any better. It's expensive here, and it's taking a big toll on me. The food is not too bad. There's nothing to do here in terms of activities. It's nice and clean. They got books here to read. They have a game room where they play games. They even have a patio, weather permitting. But that's about it. They have a lot of temporary help here, and you don't get what you pay for. The activities are non-existent. Everything could be improved a little bit.

I visited this facility

I will be moving into Cantata Adult Life Services. I know I'm eventually going to need more care, so that's one of the reasons why we chose this place is because it does have different levels of care. I can have care until I die without moving anywhere else, and that's very important. There wasn't anything I didn't like about it. Everyone I've met so far has been friendly and very helpful. The rooms in assisted living were pretty good sized. They had 3 different options in assisted living, and I went for a studio. There was a kitchenette in the room, and the bathroom had a step-in shower, which was incredibly important for me. The room itself was a good size for one person. They had 1-bedroom apartments and 2-bedroom units as well. It was a rather small community, so people got to know each other very well. They had a lot of activities. I met one of the activity directors and he was asking me about some things I'd like to do. When I told him I play mahjong, he said he didn't know anybody else who did, but I could teach people how to play mahjong and start a group. They would take you shopping once a week. The food was delicious. They call their dining area a restaurant, and it very much is. We had a waiter come to the table. There were a couple of specials for each meal, but they also had quite a comprehensive menu that you can order from if you don't want the specials.

If I could give a zero I would. When you first come in the facility smells like poop and looks messy. The staff look at you as if you should not be there and don’t even greet you when you come in. Had we not said anything they would have not spoke to us at all. Every time my Aunt improves enough in the hospital to be sent to rehabilitation she is sent to their facility she ends up with some infection or her vitals get bad and she ends up having to go back to the hospital. Yesterday I went to see my Aunt at this facility because I heard she had an accident (incontinent bowels) and they had to clean her. I made it 3 hours later and found her laying in sheet with old poop on it as well as her pillow under her feet. I could not find anyone to help for about 10min and when I did I told them to change it and me and my mom stepped out so they could. We immediately came in when they were done to find that her same poopy pillow had been flipped over and placed back under her feet. I told the CNA and Nurse and the CNA said “I did change them”. So I walked her in the room and showed her the pillow and told her “you did not change it you just flipped the pillow over and put it back under her feet. I know because that poop was on the left side on the top and now it’s on the right side on the bottom” Also, Her old linen was left in the room. I told the head nurse that her linen was left in her room She came in and reassured me it was not. But again upon further Inspection the other pillow had red pop or juice all over it. Finally they changed everything. Today we get a call from my aunt’s husband that they are shipping her back to the hospital because her vitals are not good and she might have an infections. If she does have an infection it’s because she got it from that super unclean facility. It’s cluttered and they have dirty equipment everywhere. Not to mention the staff is not compassionate. At this point I feel like it’s retaliation from us having to tell them to do their job correctly yesterday and will be seeking legal representation asap.

I have toured Cantata Adult Life Services. The staff was helpful, friendly, and very strong on marketing. For the most part, the facilities were clean and well-maintained. The room's layout was ok and the size was about average, but for my needs, it felt small. I saw some residents playing cards, they have an exercise area for the residents which was positive, they also have a library and some attractive common spaces for gatherings. The outdoor area looks nice, but the facilities themselves need more updating for accessibility, particularly.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I visited a friend in Cantata Adult Life Services in Brookfield. It was called The British Home. He is in assisted living. He is completely handicapped. It's wonderful. They have bus service available. They seem to give him very good care. I believe the cost there is a little more than I can afford. He's a little better off money wise than I am. The meals are quite good. He doesn't complain. They even give them extra bacon when he likes it. He's very happy with the meals, and they seem quite nice when I was there. I didn't eat there, but he's very happy with them. It's a very clean facility and it has been around forever. It's a very nice facility. It's an older facility (at least the original part). They have activities for the residents. They have a gym, and they have sponsored outings. He's very happy there. It's always been an excellent facility. The staff members were very nice when I visited him. The only thing he doesn't like is that they follow his diet, and they won't give him sweets. He doesn't really partake on activities because he is kind of a loner. They basically get him out of bed, and they wheel him. He sits out in the dayroom. As far as group activities, he doesn't partake of that. It's not his thing.

My dad stayed at Cantata for 1 week. He mysteriously died after 7 days. The staff left him laying in feces for several days until we found out and complained. My dad told us some of the staff were very cruel to him. At our last meeting , with Laima one of the Hispanic males complained about taking him to the washroom. My dad was un able to walk without assistance. The next day my dad was pronounced dead. I reached out to Ms. Laima for answers she never cared enough to respond. A cLean facility with activities but Beauty is deceptive!

My aunt has been in Cantata Adult Life Services for a year now. She's getting very good care, and we're very happy with the staff. They've been very good to her, and it's been a good experience for her so far. The appearance is great. It's always very clean. If the light bulb burns out, they fix it right away. They've been very good about its upkeep. The people are always very nice, and she likes it there. The only complaint in the last six months was they ran out of bacon one day. They've got a doctor there, and they're very good about answering my questions. I would recommend it to anyone.

The British Home (Cantata Adult Life Services) is very well-maintained on the interior. It's very well-organized and clean. The staff was exceptional in getting my aunt placed there. The food is acceptable. They have a beauty parlor, interactive sessions, arts and crafts, and outings.

My relative stayed in the rehab facility and it was terrible! The staff cannot handle the complexity of patients. Records are handwritten. Also, a Respiratory Therapist changed my family member's trach without sanitizing it!!! Then turned to sepsis and later died 24 hours later... Please, I am begging you to not send your family member here. We ended up at this facility because we needed an open rehab center asap. Yeah, no wonder the facility was open, because they're terrible. PLEASE look into the facility before sending, I would not like your family member to also pass away due to facility errors.

My mother is in Cantata Adult Life Services (formerly British Home). Overall, we're satisfied with them. We had a bumpy start, but once I told them what I expected, they performed very well. She had a stroke, and they're one of the few places that do non-weight-bearing rehab. They're very compassionate. It's a very small facility which is nice, and they have a good staff-to-resident ratio. We've have several meals. My mom doesn't like the food, but my sister and I thought it was perfectly fine. They have tremendous and excellent rehab staff.

My mom is in Cantata Adult Life Services. Overall, we are satisfied with them. There were some concerns, but when I told them what we expected, they took it very well. They have assisted living also. We originally went to look at an apartment, but in the interim, she had a stroke, so she is in the skilled care part. She is in rehab because she has all kinds of issues, and they are one of the few places that do that rehab. They are very compassionate. It is a very small facility, which is nice. They have a good staff-to-patient ratio. We've had several meals there. My mom does not like the food, but my sister and I think it is perfectly fine. My mother is used to her own cooking. They have a tremendous rehab staff. They are excellent.

My husband is in British Home right now. He is in a double room, but it's very nice. For the most part, the staff is 90% terrific. He's trying to do some physical therapy. He's got COPD, and he is having a hard time, and they're trying to get things figured out for him. He really enjoys when they bring music around. They have music on Friday and Sunday. He is a former musician, and he likes the things that they have. He can't really do some of the things, as he's got some cognitive problems. The dining area is very nice. You're able to sit out and talk with the people if you wish and it's very pleasant.

One of my parents is a resident at cantata on the assisted living side. The rental is expensive and doesn't include much assistance. Every extra service is an additional cost. If we had more time, we would have gone elsewhere.

Cantata Adult Life Services seemed overpriced for what they were offering. The rooms were extremely small. They were clean and at a well-kept level. They did not have a urine smell. The nurses and assistants all seemed very nice. The people seemed nice. They did not seem to have as good of a program.

The Wye Valley apartments were very nice but they were very small. I would have to get rid of an awful lot of stuff before I'm ready to move in there. The group that I belong to is having a meeting there in some of their other rooms. It seemed to me like it was an appropriate place. They have been very generous in providing those. The services they offered to the group that I meet with had been very good. They offered a very nice meeting room, they provided lunch for us and that sort of thing. The food had been quite good.

I am a past client of this provider

My mom was happy with the lady from Cantata Adult Life Services. She was just fantastic, wonderful person. But her hours didn't meet with what we needed her for. They required more hours per day for someone to come out. We just couldn't do that because it depends on what my mom needs. Sometimes my mom needed her more, sometimes less. So we went with a private individual because her hours are better suited to our needs. My aunt was also a resident there for about four years before she passed. We couldn't be more satisfied with them. The grounds are gorgeous, the nursing home itself is spotless, very clean, and no smell. The staff is so helpful.

I visited this facility

We liked the vibe of Woodlands at The British Home - it was friendly and casual, yet the business of taking care of those who needed it was being attended to. The grounds were spacious and well tended. We were in Chicago checking out assisted living residences and decided to check out some of the suburban areas, since they are so easy to access from the city. There were plenty of staff to take care of basic needs and cleaning. All of the areas were pleasant to be in and we could see that the residents thought so, too. The activities ranged from board games, to discussions, private reading and watching film and TV - some people were also using computers. The staff is well-versed at taking care of a variety of types of people, from those who are not ambulatory - to people who have memory issues. Our aunt is in the early stages of dementia - it comes and goes - so she needs to live in a place that can handle this. The indoor areas were all clean and bright. There is plenty of sunlight so that they do not need to use lighting when it is sunny outside. This is true for many of the dwelling spaces, as well. Our aunt likes to make artwork, so the lighting is really appreciated. The activities they plan regularly include everything from visiting local restaurant favorites, the public library and movies - to day trips to nearby Chicago. They have planned exercise classes - but also offer residents to work out any time they wish. We liked that they encourage exercise - a people with early dementia can be forgetful. The dining room was quite nice, with plenty of space. The food we saw looked and smelled delicious. The menus all had healthy food options for all kinds of diets. Healthy snacks are offered all day and into the evening, as well as whenever residents request them. The private areas were nicely decorated and personalized for the residents and it was clear that they enjoyed their surroundings a great deal. We are glad we took the time to look at this facility and it is in the running as one of the better ones we visited so far.

Cantata is the new name for what had previously been the British Home and apparently its name was changed just a few weeks ago. I was told that the name change is an attempt to overhaul the stuffy image associated with the British Home. The word "Cantata" is derived from the Italian word "cantare" which means "to sing" and the name change is meant to convey a kind of new age composition of voices to care for the elderly. To my mind I never had that image of the British Home as being stodgy. I used to go biking along the bike trail just outside the home and I was more curious than anything. I had always associated the Home with Brookfield Zoo which is practically in its backyard. Nevertheless I can appreciate what the nursing home is trying to do in recreating its image. I would recommend this assisted living facility based on its cleanliness, the amount of light exposure from its modern windows and an ample size health center that also allows membership from the community. Indeed on the day that I visited I saw some very energetic seniors on bikes and tread mills and I was very impressed. These folks were trying to live life to its fullness! That along with the light streaming from the floor to ceiling windows in the lobby and throughout sold me. Like any place that you are deciding to live there are pros and cons. Another positive is the proximity to medical staff that are housed at the facility. The thing that I did not like about the facility was the rather nondescript furnishings (the chairs and tables throughout). The sitting rooms just didn't seem like a place I could relax, but that could just be my own taste. The dining room I thought was pretty generic (except for the windows). The menu did not impress me, but I will say that I did get a whiff of what smelled like peach cobbler and that was fantastic. I was told that meal preparation had been taken over by new management recently. I also did not care for the individual apartments, especially the carpet which was dark and seemed institutional. I will say that the facility was clean and smelled good. The receptionist and customer relations specialist were very nice and helpful. Overall I would recommend Cantata and this may be a great time to move here not only because of its name change, but the kind of upbeat image it is trying to promote.
