What to Consider About Assisted Living in the Bronx

The New York State Department of Health is responsible for the licensure and regulation of adult care facilities, including assisted living communities. The department also deals with care complaints from residents living in these communities and carries out regular inspections.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in the Bronx

  • Residents of the Bronx enjoy easy access to activities and events located across the New York Metro area, as well as those that extend into Connecticut and New Jersey, thanks to a well-connected transit system. Seniors in the area can receive a metro card for a reduced rate, allowing them to use the bus, subway system, railway and express bus for half the normal price. The Bronx is also implementing a new bus service that increases the normal routes available and is reconfiguring existing routes to make it easier to travel through the borough.
  • The whole of New York City, including the Bronx, is designated as an AARP Senior-Friendly community. As part of the AARP Age-Friendly community, New York City’s mayor and the AARP commission prioritize certain services for seniors, from increasing primary care options to making sure seniors are included in local cultural and artistic programming. The community hopes to maximize intergenerational opportunities and increase the availability of dementia resources for seniors and their families.
  • There are more than 10 hospitals and medical centers in the Bronx area, including a psychiatric facility and a VA hospital. Montefiore Medical Center is nationally ranked in both cardiology and geriatrics. While there are plenty of health care providers for seniors to choose from, the Bronx has fewer health care providers per capita than the national average.
  • Like other areas of the New York metro area, the Bronx offers seniors a wealth of cultural, scientific and artistic points of interest to enjoy. Many of these venues offer steep discounts for seniors. The Botanical Gardens, the Bronx Zoo and the Bronx Opera are just three of the organizations that give seniors a discounted rate.
  • One of the benefits of living in New York state as a senior is the generous tax laws available to the elderly. New York doesn’t tax Social Security payments or retirement accounts such as 401(k) plans and IRA disbursements. The state also allows seniors to exclude up to $20,000 in income from taxable pensions. Additionally, seniors may deduct a portion of the costs for long term care.

Paying for Assisted Living in Bronx

Seniors who live in the Bronx pay a monthly average of $5,750 for assisted living care, which is higher than the cost of assisted living at the state and national levels by approximately $1,200 per month.

The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities

Bronx seniors typically pay more for assisted living than those who live in cities further from the metropolitan area, including Poughkeepsie and Kingston, north of New York City. Seniors in the Bronx pay almost $1,000 more than those in Poughkeepsie and just over $1,200 more than those in Kingston. In neighboring states, however, seniors living in Bridgeport, Connecticut, pay over $500 more per month, and those in Trenton, New Jersey, pay nearly $2,400 more for assisted living services.

The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care

When comparing the cost of assisted living with that of other types of senior care, assisted living care in the Bronx sits somewhere in the middle. It’s $3,800 more per month than the cost of staying in an adult day health care program and approximately $200 more per month than in-home care. Home health care is a little closer in cost to assisted living services, as it offers care focused on medical treatments instead of cleaning or household management. Still, assisted living is $30 more per month. Comparing assisted living care to skilled nursing care, however, a semiprivate room in a nursing home costs approximately $12,500 each month for seniors in the Bronx — $6,700 more per month than assisted living care.
