Caring for my mom Member since August 18, 2010Mom was born in 1930. She came to live with my husband and I in 2007. Toward the middle of the third year of having her with us, it became impossible to continue on. My husband and I are both self-employed and we both work from home. Having her here with us worked well having Mom here until she reached the point where her memory was about 5 minutes, if that. My office is right down the hall from her room. Constant interruptions for repeated questions and the loss of her reason and logic made it impossible for me to work. We found a great Assisted Living Facility two miles from our house. She was really angry and hurt when she first moved in there in August 2010. Finally in mid-January 2011, after a very deep depression, she was put on various medications to help her mental state. Now she says she loves it there. Some days she says she understands why we had to move her out and she says she's very grateful for all of our help. Other days, not so much :) It has certainly been a journey. And it isn't over yet. Update August 2012: Mom is in locked dementia unit of a nursing home as of a few days ago. And so far seems to really enjoy it. She's in the unit not because she is an 'escape risk' but because they have activities geared specifically for dementia.
