DRose
Caring for my spouse Member since April 28, 2009My mother is 92 years-old and fairly recently became bedridden. She has lived with my husband and me since 2002 following my father's transition. She had a hip replacement due to a fall about six years ago. Since then she has been in and out of the hospital and rehab facilities, too numerous to count. She must be monitored almost 24/7. I have changed my sleeping to daytime hours so that I can monitor her at night. During the time when I am asleep my husband (who has Alzheimer's) keeps an eye on her. So far this works, somewhat. During the past two months, although her hospital bed has a full length railing with about 8-10" at the foot, she has managed to get out of the bed and fallen several times. I am 68 and my husband is 80. I requested and received a Hoyer Lift. Therefore, I have been able to get her off the floor and back in bed. In spite of the lift, I am completely exhausted afterwards. She has promised me twice that she will not try to get up anymore. I was advised by a relative to get some restraints for her. What is your opinion about the use of restraints and if you agree with the use of restraints, please advise me as to what I should look for. She weighs approx. 140-150lbs. is about 5' 4" tall.
