Little-Known Veterans Benefit Can Pay for Your Parent's Nursing Home

If either of your parents served in any branch of the armed services during a time of war, the Veterans' Pension Benefit might help pay for nursing home care and other medical expenses.

This underpublicized benefit provides tax-free annual income -- up to $21,615 for a couple; $18,234 for a veteran; and $11,715 for a widow or widower. The money can be used to pay for covered medical expenses, including assisted living fees, home health aides, prescription drugs, co-payments, and insurance premiums, among other expenses.

To qualify, your parent must have served at least 90 days in a branch of the armed services with at least one day of service during a period of war. Applicants won't be eligible if they were dishonorably discharged, and they must also meet some basic income requirements.
