Nausea, which affects about half of those who undergo chemotherapy, is often triggered or made worse by a sensitivity to odors -- a tuna sandwich, auto exhaust, the dog's wet coat -- brought on by cells in the digestive tract that reject harmful chemicals. One way you can help: buy a small tabletop fan and place it where your parent can easily turn it on, turn it up, or reposition it when a smell becomes bothersome. You can even buy a small plastic fan "necklace" to hang on a string around your parent's neck; it creates just enough breeze to waft away cigarette smoke and other odors.
