It's vitally important for someone with type 2 diabetes to take good care of her toenails to prevent a small problem, like an ingrown or raggedly nail, from becoming big trouble, like an ulcer or bacterial infection. Technique matters: Trim toenails straight across -- never cut into the corners or taper the nails, which could trigger an ingrown toenail. Don't cut nails too short or try to clean down the sides with sharp objects. Gently smooth any rough edges with an emery board.

If the person with diabetes has reduced feeling (neuropathy) in her feet, any toenail infection, or tough nails, ask her podiatrist for help. Even if she simply has trouble bending or using the clippers, she should seek assistance from you or from a professional.
