After radiation treatment, your parent's skin may be red and raw, much as it would be after a severe heat or chemical burn. The most soothing treatment for this painful condition is gel sheets; look for the brand names Radiacare and RadiaDres, available from medical and home health suppliers. (Topical aloe vera gel works reasonably well, but most people find the gel sheets, which are sterile and hydrating, more effective.) If you like, you can refrigerate them before use to maximize the cooling effect.
