If your parent has had a stroke, tying her own shoes may be too much to ask. Unless she's willing to live with Velcro fasteners on all her shoes, springy elastic shoelaces might be just what she needs. These laces end in a tight spring that holds shoes and laces snug -- without a single knot. Springy shoelaces can be found in some shoe stores, drugstores, and online (try searching for "curly laces").

I went to the website given for http://www.enablemart.com/Catalog/Sock-and-Shoe-Aids/Perma-Ty-Elastic-Shoelaces and they said they now do NOT have them. They said: No, we now deal more with high technology and less with daily living accessories.
Payless shoe store has them. I just bought 3 new ones for mom as they are wonderful for her and no more tying for me. I cannot find them anywhere else, have looked extensivly so Payless always have them.
There is a new device that gets one in & out of regular walking & running shoes with a wave of one hand. It tightens, secures or releases the laces if you can get a finger to the top of the shoe. It's called lace-amatic
I have a good friend with down syndrome that uses the <a href=" http://www.enablemart.com/Catalog/Sock-and-Shoe-Aids/Perma-Ty-Elastic-Shoelaces">Perma-Ty Elastic Shoelaces </a>. She loves them.
I completely agree that Elastic Shoelaces are the answer! My mother cannot bend at the waist (hip replacement) so tying typical shoelaces is not possible. She fought long and hard against getting these. I think she thought they would not be stylish. Now she says she cannot live without them. These laces are available a lot of places, but we found that the box stores have a lower quality product. We got Mom's from : http://www.enablemart.com/Catalog/Sock-and-Shoe-Aids/Perma-Ty-Elastic-Shoelaces. This website not only had the laces, but also the sock stick we needed as well. Now Mom has the independence of being able to totally dress herself...herself. That was incredibly important to her. These are GREAT!
