Whenever your parent is about to see a doctor or other healthcare provider for the first time, make sure she checks in advance to see if the provider accepts assignment of Medicare's approved charges for the care she'll receive. Accepting assignment means the provider won't charge your parent the permissible 15 percent above Medicare's approved amount for the provider's services.
