Medicare Coverage for Your Parent With Diabetes

Medicare can help pay for self-testing devices and supplies for your parent with type 2 diabetes. This includes glucose meters, test strips, and lancets. Medicare also covers diabetes self-management training from a certified diabetes educator and medical nutrition therapy services from a registered dietitian. It pays for biannual foot exams if your parent has nerve damage in either foot due to diabetes; and if he has Medicare Part B, he's also eligible for coverage of routine screenings such as eye exams and A1c tests.

To get these supplies and services paid for under Medicare, your parent needs a prescription from his doctor that states that he has diabetes, provides specific details about his self-care treatment regimen, and advises educational training.
