If paramedics are called to your parent's house for a medical emergency, it's vital that her updated medical information be readily available -- especially if she lives alone. The nonprofit program Vial of Life helps your parent keep a copy of important medical information right on the front of her refrigerator. A decal on the front door lets responders know it's there. MedicAlert, another nonprofit, offers medical bracelets with a personalized phone number that connects a responder to your parent's medical history at the organization's call center. If your parent has a personal emergency response system (PERS), the provider's call center will maintain a computer file of her medical history.
