If you're looking into getting a personal emergency response system (PERS) for your parent, ask how a company's response center staff is trained -- and be skeptical about the answer. Many companies claim their responders, the people who take action when an emergency button is pushed, have special emergency or 911 certifications or credentials. They may -- but there are no official government-mandated certification requirements or programs covering PERS responders, so ask questions and get detailed information. Ask if the company requires training before someone starts answering calls; if the training involves any exams or tests; and if the staff or consultants include any licensed emergency medical technicians or medical personnel.
