Offering a choice to someone with Alzheimer's boosts her sense of involvement and encourages cooperation because it's less like you're giving an order. To gently steer your parent toward the decision you'd prefer, try mentioning that choice last. For example, if you want to eat on the patio for a change, ask, "Would you like to eat in the kitchen or out on the patio?" Your parent is likely to better remember -- and therefore respond with -- the last option you give her.
