Measuring food is a necessary part of how your parent with type 2 diabetes manages her diet. But sometimes it's inconvenient -- or even impossible -- and your parent just has to wing it. When that happens, she (and you) can still keep track of portion size with this "handy" measuring equivalency chart:
- One thumb tip = 1 teaspoon of oil
- One thumb = 1 tablespoon, or 1 ounce of cheese
- One palm = 3 ounces of meat, fish, or chicken
- One fist = 8 ounces of liquid such as milk, or 1 cup of solid food such as fresh vegetables
