How to set a time for a memorial gathering or gatherings

Weekends or weeknights after normal work hours are most common times for holding funeral and memorial services, since that's when it's most convenient for family members and friends to attend.

A funeral, which is traditionally a somewhat formal event, is usually held quite soon after the death occurs, generally within a week or, at the most, two. Because funerals are most often held at a funeral home's chapel or at a church, the timing of the gathering may be dictated in part by when the facilities are available.

A memorial service, on the other hand, usually takes place several weeks or months after the death occurs -- allowing for more planning time and for out-of-town guests to make travel plans.
