What To Do When a Loved One Is First Diagnosed With Cancer - Get the full To Do list

Plan for transportation to and from treatment.

How to Plan for Transportation to and From Treatment

If your loved one can't or shouldn't drive to and from treatment -- which can take several hours and leave the patient feeling exhausted -- you'll need to make alternate plans.

It's best to find one friend or family member who's willing to be the point person on driving arrangements, since this can be a time-consuming task all by itself. Look for someone who's organized and reliable.

If you have to take on this role yourself, keep in mind that you'll need someone to serve as a backup when the primary driver cancels at the last minute. Also, make sure drivers have good directions on where to go, to avoid delays.

If you're a long-distance caregiver and don't have anyone you can call on to drive, you may want to hire a personal assistant who can drive as well as help around the house.
