What To Do When a Loved One Is First Diagnosed With Cancer
Plan for someone to accompany your loved one to doctors' appointments.
Why It's Important to Have Someone Accompany Your Loved One to Doctors' Appointments
Cancer treatment can be intimidatingly scientific, and it's difficult for anyone to absorb and remember everything that's said at appointments. It's also natural for cancer patients to get anxious or emotional when talking about what's happening to them, which can prevent them from focusing on treatment details. Having a second person present at the appointments to listen, ask questions, and write down important instructions -- as well as offer comfort -- is important.
If you don't live near the person you're caring for and if you can afford it, you may want to hire a geriatric care manager for this role (or even to take on the larger role of managing your loved one's overall healthcare).
