Make arrangements to care for pets.

Why and how to plan for pets if someone you're caring for has Alzheimer's

For people with early to moderate Alzheimer's, a pet can ward off loneliness and depression. Make sure animals are fed, given water, and properly cared for.

If your loved one moves or becomes incapacitated, though, you may need to find a new home for the pet. Starting a search for candidates early can help avoid the need to turn the animal in to a shelter. Two possibilities:

  1. A friend or family member might take in the pet now but bring it for frequent visits.
  2. Some care communities allow pets because of the recognized psychological benefits -- something to consider when choosing a facility if your loved one is very attached to a pet.
