Locate written instructions or arrange for organ, tissue, or body donation

How to locate written instructions for organ or body donation when someone dies

Find out whether your loved one left written instructions to donate organs, tissues, or body by:

  • Looking for a donor card, often in a wallet and sometimes noted on a driver's license.
  • Checking an advance directive, power of attorney for health care, or living will, which sometimes specify such wishes.
  • Asking hospital personnel to check the state registry.

Many states also allow survivors to choose to donate a deceased person's organs or tissues. Find out the options in your state at Donate Life America.
