What to Do When You First Find out Someone Has Had a Stroke:
Get a swallowing assessment.
Why a Swallowing Assessment Is Important After a Stroke
Swallowing difficulties are a common problem after a stroke. When muscles on one side don't function properly, water and thin liquids may come back up -- or worse, be aspirated into the lungs.
Ask the doctor if she's ordered a swallowing assessment; if not, ask when it's going to be done -- and keep asking until it gets done.
Talk to the doctor and speech therapist about the results, what types of therapies might help, and what measures they plan to take to ensure adequate nutrition.
