How to choose music and songs for a funeral or memorial service

Many funeral and memorial services incorporate or open and close with some type of music or singing, whether it's played from a recording, performed by musicians, or sung by those attending.

Guidance in choosing. Obvious choices are scores that were favorites of or meaningful to the deceased. While all choices should be tasteful in the setting, they need not all be somber. Many services incorporate humorous or upbeat songs to great effect. What's most important is to honor the deceased meaningfully and appropriately.

Payment. It's common to pay an honorarium to the musicians or choir director involved. A funeral director, minister, or someone else who is officiating can usually tell you what's an appropriate payment.
