How to Automate Deposits, Payments, and Other Transactions

If the seniors are willing, automating some or all of their regular deposits, payments, and other transactions is an easy way to cut down on the time you and they spend managing their monthly finances. It also helps ensure that bills get paid in a timely way -- even during those times when you or they can't write a check.

Start by going to the website of the bank or other financial institution where your loved ones currently do most of their banking and looking for instructions on how to automate transactions. Or call the bank and ask them to walk you through the process. Once you set up the payment or deposit system, show them how to check their accounts, or regularly give them printouts of the information.
