when a caregiver leaves
I live in Pa, does anyone know if there are legal consequences for a caregiver that abandons a patient, My step-mother just left my Dad and although she is not his POA, she also did not tell anyone she was leaving him so that other arangements could be made for his care

Off the top of my head, while not sure what the actual consequences would be (if any), I do believe Adult Protective Services (APS) would be able to get involved. Once involved, they would be able to help determine if there is a cause for any legal charges and present the case to the authorities. For the state of PA, you can check here:

According to the site:
Any person who believes that an older adult is being abused, neglected, exploited or abandoned may call the elder abuse hotline. The hotline is open 24 hours a day.
Statewide elder abuse hotline: 1-800-490-8505

It is possible for Elder Abandonment charges. Whether anyone will act is the question. And the legalities - sometimes it depends on how the person is related.
She should have atleast called police to report an elder left alone who should not be.
