My husband stayed six weeks. The last two weeks were physical therapy in the hospital where there was a daily schedule of rehab activities and support and no excuses.

A lot depends on your insurance. My dad stayed in the hospital for 1 week and in rehab at the hospital for 2 weeks. They wanted to send him to a nursing home for more rehab, I think he could have stayed a month there, with medicare paying it. I refused, I could do just as much for him at home as they would. The doctor didn't believe me and when the caseworker came and talked to me about it, it didn't take long for her to see I knew what I was doing. He had been in worse shape befor and I kept him home. Also I worked in home health with the elderly for several years and work for UCP with a severly handicapped 17 year old, so needless to say, I brought him homw with the caseworkers blessings!

I work at a facility in Gilmer that has several residents on the ventilator/trach. Physical therapy is performed with these residents and wonderful quality care if provided to them as well on a daily basis. It may be benifiting to place her in a nursing home for a short time until she is stronger and reevaluate her condition at the proper time.
