83 year old Dad, 77 year old Mom want to drive from FL to CA
My parents are moving in with me next month for alot of reasons but mostly because they're getting older and this way when they need more care, they'll already be living with me.
Anyway, my Dad is 83, my Mom is 77 and they want to drive out here from Florida. I live in California. They have hired a mover but they want to drive instead of fly. Me and my brother think this is a crazy idea. My parents have both had their share of health problems and on a trip like this in the winter anything can happen. What if one of them has a stroke when they're in the middle of nowhere? Plus, just the stress of this much driving over a week will probably add 10 years to their life.
This issue has become very heated in my family. My brother and I really don't want them driving and they are insisting that's what they will do. We've tried everything to talk them out of it but they just get angry and just stop telling us things. For instance, last night I found out they're moved up their move date by a 2 weeks.
If they drive out here after all me and my brother's pleading to fly (instead) I think this will probably destroy our relationship. It bothers me that they've lied to me and don't see how selfish this act of theirs is because if they do have a health issue on the road OR if it does add 10 years to their life, then caregiving will be on a whole different level -- all because they were too stubborn to listen to reason.
How can we get through to them? We think this is reckless and risky not only for health reasons but because two senior citizens driving across the country are going to be targets especially at the cheap motels they'll be staying at.

Thanks for your note Felicia... just wanted to let you know things did all work out. My parents gave in and flew. They didn't want to start their new life out here in on a bad note. They've been living with me since December and my Dad definitely thinks he can and should do alot of things that aren't a always a good idea. So, we have our moments. But, overall things are going pretty well.
