Making them comfortable - what does that consist of?
As I sit here at my computer, completing my work for the day in between taking care of dinner and my kids and the never-ending laundry, I began to plan for my own comfort for the evening - a little mixed drink, a hot bubble bath, a nice candle, favorite reading material, music playing. This is my turn-to-comfort-cure for those days when the world seems to be crashing in on me.
Since here is where I was working, I started wondering about those who need comforting every day, because they are in pain, or they are scared, or they are feeling weak and just in need of a perk-up. Or perhaps they are in their last days - what makes them more comfortable?
I am, thankfully, not in that situation, but I recall when my father was dying - eight years ago this past February - and his cousin had come to visit and had asked him if there was anything she could do to make him more comfortable.
He wanted a pineapple milkshake. He reminded her of when they used to get them at the ice-cream drive-in in the little coastal town they'd grown up in.
But it was February! She promised to look.
Kitty-corner to the hospital was a mom-and-pop hamburger shop. Their special for February? PINEAPPLE MILKSHAKES.
And it made my dad's day. And frankly, hers, too.
It made him comfortable - smiling, happy, and...well, smiling.
What makes someone comfortable? What might they want? What have they asked for and found solace in?

LAURA, My mom is dying of brain cancer right now.She has been asking for ice cream everyday. My sister and I have been giving it to her everyday. It's all she wants to eat. This has brought us real comfort being able to give her something like ice cream has comforted her in her time of misery.

Happy, thank you for responding! That is a nice thing to be able to give.
