Husband with Cancer losing job need advice on how to prepare for finances
Everyone we talk to is amazed that my husband is still working after all he's been through. He has over 100 tumors in his right leg and has been through many unsuccessful treatments since he was diagnosed. We currently travel out of state for treatment. We just found out his cancer has progressed while on a trial so they've discontinued it and he'll start a new one in September that he will be hospitalized out of state. His boss just told him that he would need to find a replacement for him. (Eric has been hospitalized quite a bit this year for treatments.) They have less than 20 employees so they are not bound by FMLA nor COBRA. I'm scared to death. I make only $20,000/yr. We do however have about $70,000 in IRAs.
Does anyone have any advice for us. We are going to apply for Social Security Disability as soon as he gets fired. I don't think we will qualify for Medicaid in Ohio because of the IRA's. What can I do because he won't have any health insurance coverage.
Thank you for any advice.

I would check with my local Bar Association (check under your County name) and see if they offer a low-cost consultation with an attorney. You need a Disability or Elder Care attorney. There is a website for Elder Law attorneys, something like NAEL - google National Association for Elder Law Attorneys and see if there is one in Ohio, and whether they'll do a low-cost consultation. There are methods of qualifying him for Medicaid (name differs by state, but it's Federal medical coverage for qualified indigents). Speak to an EL attorney (even if Hubby is young), as they know the criteria for qualification, and whether assets can be changed to coordinate best with qualification for federal/state aid. They are also well versed in public benefits and criteria. Good luck. I'm sorry for your troubles. Sheila
