Methadone
I have been off of heroin for a little over 6 years but I did it by being on methadone.. I didn't know anything about it except that it would help me with the withdrawls. When I got on it I was under 90lbs soaking wet, my hair was falling out in clumps, and I had abseses's on both of my upper arms. My lifestyle was degrading to say the least and I just wanted to lay down and die but was to chicken to committ suicide. Since being on Methadone I went back to college, started my own housekeeping business, and have earned back most of the trust from some of my family members. I have heard a lot of negative comments about being on it. I no longer am welcome in many of the NA meetings I used to attend. Just recently my brother has copped an attitude because he doesn't understand why I am on it and feels like I have been lying to him about being clean. I have tried to get off of it 3 times mostly because of what others think and say and have been unsuccessful. Now I spend most of my days not wanting to be around others cause I don't want to have to explain or justify my reasons. Has anyone ever been on it or felt this way? I looked into rapid detox to get off of it but it is way to expensive. Anyway if you have any experience please help me try to figure this mess out. Peace

Hi, whoever you are.
My heart goes out to you.
You've probably found another site by now since no one's responded to you, but if you happen to read this---please don't give up!
From what you wrote, I assume methadone has helped you get your life back together. You've made much progress, and I hope you seek professional help from a drug and alcohol counselor.
I know someone who was on methadone and tried to stop twice on his own. He failed. He checked himself into a treatment, and failed. The second time he checked himself in, he succeeded. He's been doing great for several years.
Just please don't give up, and don't let others get you down.

First of all, find new, non-judgmental N.A. meetings to attend! And, second, do not feel compelled to share in meetings that you are on Methadone maintenance. You have accomplished so much--don't become discouraged. Keep going to meetings and hang on to those accomplishments.
