Do You Know the Difference Between Dementia and Normal Memory Loss?
Is your aging loved one showing signs of Alzheimer's, dementia, or normal memory loss? Test your IQ about typical vs. worrisome memory issues.
We have taken care of a Alzheimer's home care resident for almost a year. We use therapeutic engagement and physical/mental exercise. She is starting to remember some of her family members and the family thought there was no hope before we started. Staying home in a familiar environment and exercising the body and brain really makes a difference!
May I respectfully suggest that whoever decided the "correct" answer for questions 2 and 5, ought to re-read the supporting material? The purportedly "correct" answer to those two questions is actually described as typical or common behavior (read the material). Fact is, the written material for each of those two questions clearly supports another answer as indicative of problems. Is this poor level of accuracy typical of the modern media?
I challenge that my answer was ALSO correct in question 2 (Using a word that doesn't make sense), as the explanation indicates, "People with dementia are more likely to give up or substitute an inappropriate word like "hat" instead of "cat" (a condition known as aphasia" 9 out of 10, thank you. My mother has it. Always asking the same question not 60 seconds later, forgetting why she's "here" when she spends a night at our house. Today she thought she was here for a week when it was just over night. Though some days are better and worse, she seems to understand things "in the moment" though soon lost. She can't believe she's almost 94. Keep taking the fish oil, astaxanthin, lutein and phytonutrients. She is also virtually blind with macular, and barely hears in the one good ear with a hearing aid. Though I think she sometimes sees with the "third eye" because she still appreciates beauty.
My mother-in-law has dementia. But in her case she has a lot of health problems. But the serious problem is that she is stubborn and doesn't want to hear what anyone has to say.
