Why do old people die from a broken hip?

The elderly can have frail bodies that do not tolerate such an action. They often die because of their increased risk of death from hip surgery. They could be more likely to get blood clots in the legs that travel to the lungs. Also pneumonia and infections can be what leads to the death.
