Any primary care doctor can treat a patient with shingles, but in severe cases you may want to see a dermatologist. While there is no cure for shingles your doctor can prescribe medicines that will help with the pain and itch associated with the virus. Some of these medicines and creams include acyclovir to reduce the pain and the length of time the outbreak will last, topical antibiotics to avoid infection, topical anesthetics, such as lidocaine, to numb the area, opiates, such as codine, to help with the pain, and anti-depressants because the shingles virus is stored in your nerves and becoming upset or over stressed may make the outbreak worse.
