A classic case of a broken hip is often an elderly patient who sustained a low-energy fall and now has pain and is unable to bear weight. In most cases of a broken hip, it is a fragility fracture due to a fall or minor trauma in someone with weakened osteoporotic bone. If the person has normal healthy bones, in most cases it is a result of high-energy trauma such as car accidents.
