What are fatal risks for a broken hip in older people?
A hip fracture in the elderly is considered a very serious issue and can most definately have fatal consequences. One of the most serious risks associated with a hip fracture is that it further limits mobility, leading to more muscle deterioration which can even become a permanent problem for the person affected. Another serious problem that can arise is that of blood clots caused my the lack of mobility. These clots form when a person is being kept immobile to allow the broken bone to heal, and they can travel through the blood vessels and arteries, becoming lodged in places such as the heart or brain resulting in strokes and ultimately death. For these reasons, and several others not mentioned here, much emphasis is placed on preventing these types of injuries in the elderly.
