What are alternatives to Humira?
Humira (Adalimumab) is a TNF-alpha inhibitor. It functions by binding TNF-alpha and preventing it from interacting with the TNF-alpha receptors in cells. Like the other TNF alpha inhibitors, it is a monoclonal antibody. Other TNF-alpha inhibitors that are approved by the FDA include Remicade (infliximab), Cimzia (certolizumab pegol), and Simponi (golimumab). These inhibitors can sometimes serve as Humira alternatives. Additional TNF-alpha inhibitor options are simpler molecules such as pentoxifylline, which is a Xanthine derivative. TNF-alpha inhibitors are most commonly prescribed in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. There are also trials on its affectiveness in some skin diseases such as hidradenitis suppurativa.
