How can I effectively emotionally support my partner through prostate cancer?

My partner is in the advanced stages of prostate cancer - it's inoperable, and he's chosen not to have radiation. His PSA fluctuates, as does his moods. He's now focused on the loss of his manhood. What is the best way to offer comfort, be empathetic, without being patronizing?
