Can steroids increase the risk of testicular cancer?
It's logical to wonder about steroids and testicular cancer, since anabolic steroids mimic testosterone and dihydrotestosterone.
I've read about lots of adverse effects of steroids, including heart disease and testicular atrophy, which temporarily inhibits sperm production. But I haven't come across steroids as a risk factor for testicular cancer.
Established risk factors include having had an undescended testicle, having had testicular cancer before, or a family history of testicular cancer. HIV infection seems to increase the risk, and Caucasian men are at higher risk than other ethnicities.
A link between steroids and testicular cancer doesn't seem to be well established, though.
