Renal cancer is a disease that occurs when malignant cancer cells arise in the kidneys. The kidneys are located just above the hips in the flank (back) on either side of the body. These organs are responsible for (among other things) filtering toxins out of the blood and acting as an integral part of the urinary tract by producing urine. The kidneys are home to tubules that aid filtering the blood. When renal cell cancer occurs, it originates in the lining of these tubules. Like any cancer, renal cancer is most dangerous if it goes undiagnosed for a long period of time, allowing the cells to metastasize (migrate) to other organs and regions of the body.
