What causes red swollen feet?

Water retention, my wife has red and swollen legs,feet and ankles,she is at present staying with her sister who was a carer at an old peoples home.She persuaded her to take her water tablets(she hates taking them because she has to stay close to the toilet)but after 15 visits to the loo the feet and ankles were much improved.So I will be without her for an extra week,or what ever it takes.Of course there are other causes.for swollen feet.
