How can I find a private group home?
You are absolutely right. Small private group homes are tough to locate. For one, they don't have the marketing budgets of the big places which is why you're not likely to find them in the usual places.
One company I had a good bit of luck with when I worked in California is actually a national company called: A Place for Mom (www.aplaceformom.com).
Once you locate a representative in your area by searching the website, call and tell him or her that you're looking for a private group home or a "board and care home" as they're sometimes referred to. You'll be asked what you can pay and the geographical area in which you'd like to focus your search. From there the representative will contact you with several options for you to explore based on your criteria.
If you choose one of the facilities that was suggested to you, the facility pays a fee to A Place For Mom while you pay nothing. Not a bad deal!
